Most common cancers are carcinomas; tumors that develop on the surface tissues or linings of internal organs in the parts of the body most vulnerable to attack by carcinogens and free radicals. Common carcinomas include breast, lung, and prostate, skin and intestinal cancers. At the initial stage of cancer, the cell DNA is attacked by a carcinogen or free radical which causes a mutation in one of the genes or chromosomes. The attack mostly occurs in organs and tissues that have been severely stressed either by abuse, improper diet or a lingering infection. For instance, heavy smokers are liable to developing cancer of the lung because they continually abuse their lungs; heavy drinkers are prone to developing liver cancer for the same reason, and so are the people who eat a diet lacking in fiber and too rich in fat and protein, they tend to get colon cancer.
